Switching Between Speech Recognition and Self-Scoring

Some treatments like Describing Actions and Naming Single Nouns* have the option to use speech recognition OR self-scoring.

  • Speech recognition uses a microphone to record the patient’s voice for automated scoring and feedback. *Recommended for most users as it adds valuable feedback.
  • Self-scoring is ideal for loud environments or for patients with speech that is very difficult to understand, or if a microphone is not available.

How to Choose a Scoring Option

  • When starting a treatment for the first time, you’ll be prompted to choose between speech recognition or self-scoring (see screenshot below).
  • Once selected, your choice becomes the default for both treatment and homework.
  • You can adjust the setting at the start of any session on the directions page.

Can I change between Speech Recognition and Self-Scoring for future sessions?

Yes. At the start of a new treatment session, switch to your preferred option on the instruction screen (see the highlighted option below).

Can I switch scoring methods during an active session?

Yes, but you’ll need to end the session and start over. Select the desired option on the instruction screen when restarting.

Can patients switch scoring methods for homework?

Yes, patients can select their preferred option on the instruction at the start of a homework session.

If they are mid-session, they must end the session, reopen the treatment, and select the new scoring option when starting.

*Verbal Working Memory has the option to switch between speech recognition and typing for patients who are not able to speak. Using Speech Strategies has self-ratings for both scoring methods, but adds precise feedback on sounds when using speech recognition.
