Typing in the Missing Letter

SKILL: Writing

DIFFICULTY: 1/5

LEVELS: 12 based on word length and position of the missing letter

BRIEF RATIONALE: This treatment is a step toward typing words that relies upon reading skills to aid writing.

In Typing in the Missing Letter, you will see a picture, hear a word, and see the incomplete written word. You will type in the missing letter using the keyboard. You can replay the audio at any time using the audio button. You can also expand the image using the arrows in the lower-right corner. The treatment auto-adjusts in difficulty based on performance.

HINT: A hint button is available in the lower-left corner of the screen to hear the missing letter name. Using the hint will mark the item as incorrect (as it was not answered independently), but may help you find the missing letter.

FOR THE CLINICIAN:

Besides word length, the position of the missing letter can influence task difficulty. Because most of the word is provided, the overall demand for typing a single missing letter is relatively low.

Patients may draw on several mechanisms to complete the word, including sounding it out through phoneme-to-grapheme conversion, accessing whole-word orthographic knowledge via the lexical route, applying familiar spelling patterns, and/or using trial and error.
